How to Hard Reset an Aastra 6757i/57i
by admin on March 20, 2012
I purchased a used Aastra 57i SIP phone from a seller on Amazon and, unfortunately, it was one of the very few whose admin password was NOT the default ’22222′. The seller had purchased it in a bulk liquidation and didn’t have any of the details, so I was left to scour the web to figure out how to get the 57i back to a factory-fresh state.
Google came up with a rare zilch (most of the posts I found said to hit ’4′ & ’6′ or ‘*’ & ‘#’ during startup, but that didn’t work). A call to a very helpful rep at Aastra solved the problem:
To hard reset an Aastra 57i or 6757i when you do not have access to the admin password, you’ll have to put the phone into its emergency ‘web recovery’ mode and reload the firmware from a TFTP, FTP or HTTP server. Do the following:
- Disconnect the phone from any outside network and run an Ethernet cable from the ‘PC’ port on the phone directly to your machine.
- Boot up the phone in Web Recovery mode by holding down the ’1′ and ‘#’ keys during phone boot (hold the keys down and then plug in the power on the phone).
- Check the IP address on the screen of the phone, and set your computer’s IP address to something in the same subnet (for example, my Aastra gave itself an IP address of 169.254.168.234 so I setup my machine to have 169.254.168.233).
- Get a TFTP or FTP server running locally on your machine. If you’ve got a Mac, Tfttserver is a good one.
- Put the latest 57i.st firmware file on your local TFTP/FTP server.
- Point your browser at the IP address displayed on the phone and you should be greeted with the Web Recovery screen.
- Enter the location of the 57i.st file and your TFTP/FTP server — *IMPORTANT – AND THIS DROVE ME NUTS: Every time I tried to start the download in Chrome or Safari by clicking on the button at the bottom of the form, I got an “Invalid Parameters” error message. I had to use Firefox and be sure to hit enter after typing the details instead of clicking on the submit button — that got the file to download.
- Voila — fresh new firmware in a full factory default state.
Hope this is helpful!

I was able to do this, but the passwrod didn’t reset to 22222. Did you have success? What version of the FW did you use?
by Craig Goodwin on June 13, 2012 at 1:24 pm. #
Yes, the password should go back to 22222 if you get a clear blank firmware install on the phone. I’m using 2.6.0.2019, which is the latest stable Asterisk-usable firmware for that phone. Let me know how you make out.

Thank you for this well written guide. The “Invalid Parameters” thing was driving me insane (i was hitting the download button). Clicking Enter instead of clicking the button did the trick. Aastra should be ashamed!

Hi there, can you also guide me because my aastra 51i screen says WEB RECOVERY AT: 192.168.1.5 .. I am struck because I don’t see anyother response from phone. And this Ip address doesn’t pull anything on my laptop. If you have any information about how to get rid of this issue, please post it here or send me an email. Your help will be highly appreciated

Hi Dave – sounds like you may need to configure your laptop to be able to see the 192.168.1.* IP range. If your machine is currently setup with DHCP (as most are), you won’t be able to talk to the phone when it’s in recovery mode. You’ll have to manually set the “static IP address” on your laptop to something like 192.168.1.100 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Make sure you’re connected to the network via ethernet cable as once you do that your WiFi won’t work.
Good luck!

Terrific guide. Thank you! I used this on an Aastra 6753i and I assume it would also work on the 53i.

Great guide; Perfect instructions. I was able to bring 3 phones back online for our company. Thank You!

All I get is “firmware download failed”…There is a “path” field that is confusing.
by Michael on July 30, 2013 at 3:27 pm. #
Try putting the .st file into the home directory of the user you’re logging in as, and leave the ‘path’ field blank.

This post is awesome. pure awesome. I was at the point of banging my head against something hard when I came across this post and saw the instructions for using Firefox, not Safari or Chrome, and then it worked perfectly. Thanks!
by Jeff on September 17, 2013 at 3:48 pm. #
Thanks, this was a real time saver!
@Michael: I found that the ‘path’ variable was not working properly. Just put the .st file in the home directory of the user you’re using to log in, and it works fine. (This is for FTP)

This article saved my life. I wrote an article of my own giving you the cred (https://coderwall.com/p/gqyvvw) and added some of my own details.

I kept putting the path in and getting a failure. Keep the path blank and just connect to the tftp server.

This worked like a charm for me! I got a 6757i off eBay that was supposed to be factory new. While the phone was new, it apparently had been configured and put away.
Anyway, pumpkin was a little wonky at first. I was also using Internet explorer but I switched to Firefox and kept at it. After a successful firmware transfer, it takes several minutes for the phone to reboot. The first time I tried it I didn’t allow enough time and manually rebooted too early. Moral of the story: after a successful transfer, just let it sit there and do its thing! Thanks for all the tips.

Thank you for the firefox tip, I was turning insane with safari. You saved my day.
A PoE switch turned bad and 6 Aastra phones were turned on and off, so they ended without firmware, and remained in the Web recovery mode.
I now remember to have met this web browser issue with another Aastra software OMM for SIP/DECT access point.
Shame on Aastra.

Thanks for the article. I have de 6755i. I tried everything many times in TFTP and FTP but could get rid of the INVALID PARAMETERS message.
The ftp server is running fine (Filezilla, verified)
The tftp server is running fine (OpenTftp, verified)
Phone address : 169.254.193.29
PC address : 169.254.193.1
firmware 55i.st, put in the root directory of the TFTP server and of the FTP server.
What I entered :
For TFTP
Filename : 55i.st
firmware
TFTP
TFTP Server : 169.254.193.1
TFTP Path : (blank)
Press Enter (don’t hit the button).
For FTP
Same thing in the FTP fields, with the addition of the FTP User Name and FTP Password.
I disabled the Windows firewall
I am in Windows 7.
I use Firefox 26 and tried IE 9
I always get the INVALID PARAMETERS message.
Working on this for 4 hours.
Any idea of what can be wrong ?

Sorry for the typo in the first lines of my message. You should read :
I have a 6755i. I tried everything many times in TFTP and FTP but could not get rid of the INVALID PARAMETERS message.
by Dysmas on January 2, 2014 at 4:32 pm. #
Well, I succeeded but it was difficult.
The trick : It will NOT work with a modern browser (I was using Firefox 16). I had to reinstall an old Firefox 3.6. If you do that, be careful to backup your history, or you will loose it (file places.sqlite in your profile). Good idea to save the whole profile. Then things are a bit strange :
With the TFTP server running, the firmware in the tftp root, and all verified.
First test : INVALID PARAMETERS
Try again, it will fail again.
Try the back button and you may get a 405 Error (method unsupported)
If you have this error you have won : click the reload button, and you will get the popup which warns that all parameters will be sent again, and all actions done again.
Click OK and the dowload will start.
The trick is to use a Firefox 3.6 and provoke this 405 error, then click the reload button, and click OK in the popup.
I have done this four times, it always worked in the same way.
Don’t ask me why it works, but it works (at least on my system) and I really enjoy this phone, it was worth the hours I spent to solve the problem (I got it on ebay and the vendor did not give the password).

Thanks so much for the update! Very helpful.

Thanks a lot to every body
@Dysmas: i tried your method and i am having same error “firmware downlod failed”.
Don’t have the 405 error.
Seem to have UDP protocole problem but not sure
Any help will be appreciate.

I fully recommand this doc witch had useful clues for me in the “Common Causes for “Download Failed” during Web Recovery” part, like : use de PC ethernet port instead of the LAN port

On the TFTP application Remember to Select the Right interface ie the One with your Local IP (TFTP Server IP), i recommend use of PC port

Hi folks! Working on one of these phones, I’ve got it in web recovery mode, but its IP is invalid (displaying http://192.168.6/) and thus I obviously can’t access the web interface. Is there some other keypad combination that causes the phone to revert to DHCP and/or self-assignment?

1. Download tftppd32 and download the latest firmware file.
2. Setup your firmware file into the software for tftp folder.
3. Setup your nic into IP range for the Aastra webrecovery.
4. Go to webrecovery IP with a browser and download the
latest firmware file into phone.
Let me know if it has resolved the problem.

Thanks for sharing, it has been resolved my problem.
My telephone went during boot-up fase standing on “Updating configuration”.
Have been using the webrecovery with tftppd32 and a new 53i.st and problems has been resolved.

Works with Microsoft Egde Browser and the ‘enter’ trick too…

The factory reset doesn’t clear the local.cfg, which is rediculous! It should be restored to factory defaults. The phone that I have has a local.cfg which downloads the server.cfg from the configuration server uri: http://website.com/provision/57i
….how do I clear that? If I click delete local files, it doesn’t do anything… it keeps downloading the config… so frustrating and annoying..

I had the same “Invalid Parameters issue” using Firefox, with no success pressing Enter instead of clicking. I installed Firefox version 2.0.11, and it has worked every time. I was able to get version 3.6 to to work after the 405 error (described by another commenter), but the 2.0.11 worked every time with no errors. Can get from http://www.oldversion.com/windows/mozilla-firefox/
by Kevin on September 29, 2015 at 10:44 am. #
Correction, version 2.0.0.11 (instead of 2.0.11).

Thanks for this article. I was able to follow this easily and it did help, however, I am seeing an issue AFTER the download begins. The webpage says “Firmeware Downloading..Please Wait”, however the phone (Aastra 6755i) doesn’t reboot and the download doesn’t seem to finish. I checked the TFTP log and see there is an error message – “Peer returns error – undefined error”. Anyone have any ideas what might be happening here? Also…is anyone aware of a way to take it out of Recovery mode? or is it a permanent state once you enter?

Thanks for this! Saved me a lot of time on a phone acquired from eBay to test against platform for a new customer.

Thank you for the guide,
I discovered that our old Voip service provider had provisioned my device with AAstra’s network. so what was happening is once the device was reset and connected to the internet it re pulled down the configuration. I called the old provider and ask them to remove it and they did after that a reset worked and the password stayed the same as expected. To test to see if this is happening reset the phone following the above guide but when it goes to startup disable the internet if it then has the expected password you now know it is asstra pushing the settings.

Set up pumkin with all the give everything options.
Then simply unclick server running on right.
Then on the Web UI request the file.
(which should be on the root folder)
One (two maybe three) second after click on server is running.
No errors.
Used IE 11

We have tried using the 1 + # to reset the phone but the phone continues to load the installed configuration instead of reverting to factory defaults. We hold down the 1 + # then power on the phone. We continue to hold down the 1 + # keys until the phone gets as far as it can go. The phone never goes into recovery mode.
Do you have any suggestions?
by tom on May 19, 2017 at 7:49 am. #
Ok, Got to the web recovery page, Used PumKin, changed the Static of the machine, dowloaded the file. Keep getting Firmware Download Failed.
Any ideas on how I can get this 6757i reformatted?
Help!

This worked for me on Mitel 6867i. The web recovery browser appears to no longer require TFTP/FTP. I was able to browse to and select the .st file directly out of my local C:/ drive.
Note – I have my DHCP scope settings pointing the phones to our configuration server when they plug into the network. After two reboots, the phone was live with our config and our admin password which it received from our configuration server.
